Ordering Horny Goat Weed
Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium grandiflorum) is currently one of the most popular herbs people order from us. Therefore, it gets its own page to make ordering simpler.
The whole herb is available as leaves. The blue grid in the background of the picture to the left is a 1 cm. grid, as is standard in all of our herb images. The leaves are most typically boiled into a tea or soup, or soaked/simmered in alcohol. The herb is .05/gm whole (secure purchase is below).
We also offer the whole leaves freshly ground into a fine powder. As this is labor intensive and only produces about .75 lb. of powder from 1 lb. of herb, it is .10/gm for the powder, minimum order 100 gm.
A 5:1 extract is also available. This is a concentrated form of the herb in a fine granular form which is readily dissolved in warm water or taken in capsules.
We have a stable source for a 10% standardized (flavonoids, focussing on icariin), full-spectrum extract. This is our recommendation for manufacturers, as the cost to concentration ratio is very beneficial. The taste is surprisingly palatable for such a concentrated extract. Please contact our herbalist if you're interested in kilogram quantities.
You may want to start with the whole herb leaf or powder, then try the concentrates. The goats who originally ate this herb didn't boil it or extract it with solvents (our extracts are water/pressure processed, not solvent processed), and it worked for them! Just because this is a plant doesn't mean that it can't have an unfavorable effect on some people, so I recommend starting with the least concentrated version and notice the effects, even if subtle, before trying the concentrates. Mixing the powders or extracts with alcohol (rice wine or vodka, usually) and drinking the powder *and* the wine will facilitate rapid absorption, as well as the time-honored relaxing and circulation-enhancing effects of moderate alcohol consumption.
Here's my caution and disclaimer: according to Chinese herbal medicine and common sense, the powerful effect of this herb (as with most herbs) can be damaging to the body if overused or abused. Chinese herbal theory cautions against overheating the kidneys with the Kidney Yang Tonics such as Horny Goat Weed. That is why even in cases of impotence caused by Kidney Yang Deficiency (often accompanied by sore/weak/cold low back, paleness, hair loss, weak knees, frequent clear urination, etc.) there will be other herbs (such as cooling and astringing herbs) to prevent side effects or damage from the depletion caused by overstimulation. Horny Goat Weed does increase sperm production and frequency of sexual activity in animals according to the research I've seen. Whether or not this is good for overall health and longevity is another issue. That's why my constant recommendation to people with health issues is to find a qualified local practitioner who can prescribe a customized formula for your individual condition.
Adjust the grams (the default is 10 gm.) in the quantity box, then add them to your Herb Basket.
