Health Benefits of Tea

Tea, whether green, black, or oolong, is the second most common drink in the world, after water. It's probably the second healthiest, as well! Tea refers to the leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis. Green tea is unoxidized, oolong is partially oxidized, and black tea is almost completely oxidized. Yet they all have health benefits. Tea has a variety of positive effects on most people's health, largely due to the antioxidants it contains. Many people have heard of the antioxidant qualities of tea, but did you know tea has a significant level of naturally occurring fluoride? A Chinese tradition is to swish tea through the mouth after a meal.

Recently, more research is being done on the effects of tea and the cardiovascular system. CNN.com reports:

"Tea drinkers take heart. People who drink tea each day significantly reduce their chances of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, according to a study published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Those who drank one or two cups a day lowered their risk by 46 percent. For those who drank four cups a day, the risk dropped by 69 percent. "

So drink up! There is a small amount of caffeine in tea. For most people, however, it's not enough to cause the 'jitters' and insomnia that coffee can produce.
