Prepared Formulas

Also known as "Patent Formulas," prepared Chinese medicines have a strong following throughout the world. Available in Chinatowns, some health food stores, and from many acupuncturists and herbalists, these formulas, made in China, have benefits and drawbacks. The benefits are that they are very inexpensive, and that their packaging is fun (though sometimes excessive). The drawbacks are questionable purity and unlisted ingredients. While most patents have been found to be safe, several over the past several years have been found to contain pharmaceutical drugs, heavy metals (mercury, arsenic, or lead), or artificial colorings. Due to the inability to guarantee purity of many common Chinese prepared formulas, Ancient Way Acupuncture & Herbs, Inc. exclusively carries lines of prepared formulas of guaranteed purity, such as Golden Flower and Plum Flower brands. These companies have stringent testing for contamination, and guarantee that there are no additives or preservatives. While the convienience and cost of the prepared formulas are attractive, the strongest and purest medicines are still the bulk herbs. Any patent can be made up of the bulk herbs for a quicker and stronger effect. However, due to the strong flavor of many herbs, pills and tablets are sometimes preferred. While it costs extra, the bulk herbs can be powdered and encapsulated or made into honey pills. However, the quality prepared formulas still get results, and are easy to take.
